Bobby Moore has been chosen as the first sporting figure people would like to see on a Bank of England note.

On the anniversary of the late England captain lifting the World Cup on 30 July 1966, the public voted the football hero top of their list, above other sportsmen and women including David Beckham and Torvill and Dean.

Steve Redgrave was second, but a quarter of all votes were for Moore, putting him ahead of the five-times Olympic gold medallist rower.

The poll, by cricket sponsors npower, featured just one current cricketer - left-arm spinner Monty Panesar - but former England captain Ian Botham came third in the vote.

An npower spokesperson said: “The call for Bobby Moore to be on a real banknote shows the status he stills holds with the British public 41 years after winning the World Cup.”

Jackie Stewart, the Scottish former racing driver, was the only non-English figure in the top ten. Kelly Holmes and Jayne Torvill were the only women.

Read in the paper today that the police confiscated a number of £20 with faces of footballers one like Michael Owen and Alan Shearer…

There were even counterfeit notes with Homer Simpsons face on…
