Ok, my PC is about 3 years old and has done very well until now. There are many games i’d like to play and my machine just don’t want to know about half of them.

My current spec is…

Intel P4 HT 3ghz
1Gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce 5200 PCI Express Card 128Mb
2x 200Gb Hdd’s
1x DVD ROM
1x DVD RW (fucked)
Windows XP
bla bla bla, you can guess the rest of the usuals.

So the time has come to replace the old girl. I’ll donate her to my parents (their laptop is newer than my PC and goes about a million times slower!)

Do you guys know where i can get a decent gaming PC for reasonable money? I don’t need any of the extras like display, mouse etc. just the base unit. Don’t want to spend more than about £700.

Cheers in advance!

TBD

I would put you onto the shop that makes mine…

Tell him what you want it for and he builds it….and he’ll tell you if you don’t need shit…

He’s been making my PCs since 2000…He’s a straight talker…

Unfortunately your mans shop will be in Englandcestershire which is no good to me. But hey, i’m sure there’s someone in Aberdeen that can do something similar. People have told me my Processor is more than capable, but my memory and graphics card let me down. Perhaps just ugrading the components will do?

This is good to test what games your PC can run.  Very good test to figure out if you can run the game before you go buy it.  From the result, you can see what you would need to upgrade in order to run which ever games.

Alien Hardware is expensive… if you’re a reasonably competent individual, however, you can do a great deal of the things yourself.  Your case is probably a standard ATX case, so you can use your current case, power supply, and drives.  I would strongly recommend that you replace your mainboard, processor, RAM and video card.  Not a terribly difficult or technical process.  The trick is, you want performance, value, and upgradability.  If you’re an AMD fan, look for a mainboard with socket AM2, make sure it can support up to at least 4 GB of RAM, and has a couple of PCIe connections and an AGP connection.  You’ll also probably want SATA capability, although that’s standard anymore.

More or less, what you want to do is get the best processor you can afford in the socket family for the board.  AM2 processors include Athlon 64 processors up to the Athlon 64 FX series… so you can get something cheap, and upgrade to a premium level processor at a later point when you can afford it.

If you’re an Intel kinda guy, do the same thing, just find Socket T (aka 775).  This runs from P4 processors on the low end to the ultra powerful Core 2 quad extremethingys that are on the cutting edge.

Just make sure whichever one you choose, you get a motherboard which specifically says it can handle the more powerful processors.

Know it’s a fair bit to chew on, but it’s not so difficult.  Private message me if you’d like specifics about which motherboard/processor combos I’d recommend personally.
