Is posting a video of a rape any worse then posting a video of someone being beheaded? Or someone being shot? Or someone getting turned to liquid because of a car crash? Or of people getting shot to bits in Iraq? Or of dogs being skinned alive? Or of someone getting beat up real bad?

I really don’t know, but me not knowing does not convince me to not post it. We have posted all of the above, so why draw the line there.
It is quite clear from the rules on this forum what we will and will not do. I apply the same to the FP (without the porn, sorry Jizzy, http://www.totallynsfw.com for all your needs).

We can’t be posting nothing but babes with tits almost hanging out, car crashes that hurt o one, people falling of skateboards and sad people that want a life on Youtube.

You have your opinion and I am glad you ventilate it. We have a sense of duty in some respects to not only entertain but to highlight too.
I am not getting on a soapbox to say we are doing good work here that is going to change the world, but we have a mission statement on TC: Anything goes, unless Willy says different. you may not like it, but you ar enot Willy, I am.

But don’t forget that nastiness is all around and instead of using words to say something is wrong or right use actions.

I have to put on my serious face now.

While rape is probably the worst violation of a humans right (or at least way up there), I don’t think a video in any way promotes rape. If someone sees a poor woman getting rape, and goes out doing the same thing, that person would probably commit that act anyway. People don’t become sick by watching movies, they’re born that way.

While I agree with both parties here, I think I need to side with Willy. Not just because he can ban my silly ass. Posting this video shows some sort of awarness, belive it or not. Maybe someone that sees this video actually does something about it (the problem).

A stupid theory you might say, but I don’t think it’s any stupider than saying that problems in the world are related to media. (I’m not saying that anybody in this discussion has made this claim)

I had no illusions that the vid would go down just because I asked for it (it wouldn’t have gone up in the 1st place if things were so), but I thought I couldn’t just stay put - that’s the closest equivalent to “action” within a forum or a site like these, if you will, and it stems also from the general esteem I have for the team and the users around here (I wouldn’t bitch about a thing on a site I just didn’t care about).

I appreciate all the comments, and I don’t think it’s been really a dumb discussion (so far, at least). Of course, I’m mainly happy to see I wasn’t alone in my line of thought on this one.

And to answer Willy’s question: a rape vid is different in my opinion from all the other subjects already posted on TC because it doesn’t only happen in fucked-up faraway places, it isn’t an accident, and it’s not ordered by some “higher power” in any chain of command (it might happen like this as well, I know).

Why draw the line there? Because, in short, rape is not the same kind of violence as the other things mentioned, and showing it like this won’t help fight it. You can perfectly exclude a rape vid while still highlighting anything you like (including rape, and this particular case), and keeping the site entertaining as hell all the while.

That’s just my opinion, and far from me the idea of imposing it on anyone (least of all the owner of the site).
But I do have to stick to it and, since most people here seem to know how to read and think (unlike elsewhere on the net), I felt I had to share it too.

How often on forums like this is rape mentioned in any other context than a link to some poorly acted eastern european porno? Its not going to stop anyone being raped but at least you guys are having to face the issue. I know at least a dozen friends who have been raped or seriously sexually asaulted, its as much of an everyday reality as car crashes or anything else

Snowball,you made a fine point very well,respect where it’s due.The pertinent issue here seems to be that selection of material to post is entirely arbitrary,and there seems to be no argument as to why ‘highlighting the issues’ should not extend to the broadcast of more morally corrupt material(child pornography,for instance). Moral limits(albeit very broad limits) should be exercised for selection of the extremely base items,each one of us would find a limit somewhere i’m sure.

Teddy, my point exactly: it is something that happens. But it’s not the same kind of violence, even if it’s as common, and I don’t think there’s any need to further spread the tape in order to make anyone think about it. You said it yourself iirc, spreading the tape is nearly as bad as the act itself.

Bringing up rape for entertainment or shock value is just not cool in my book, and I don’t need the vid for the info.

As always, just my opinion.

No one (apart from Humper) has made light of it here or on the front page. It did upset me seeing it posted but thats the age we live in. People do fucked up things and film them. A lot of people dont understand the reality of something unless they see it for themselves

I’m not taking sides. However, I am going to point out that child porn is not posted here and left for users to choose whether to look or not. I would hope it is more due to moral issues than legal ones.

Few things I would like to ad…
The sense of “right and wrong” is being introduced to us by our parents/relatives/caretakers. No Web page on earth can change my stands on the rape issue.
On the other hand I, as a parent, will not allow my kid to surf on web pages like TC until I`m absolutely sure I finished my job as a parent teaching him the difference between right and wrong. That`s my bloody job in the whole story, not Willy`s or DB`s.
Media, however, raised the lever of censorship. Bad news sells. And its all about money. But, we can`t blame “Battlefield” for Virginia tech incident, “Flight simulator” for 9/11 or The Bible for Waco. It`s us (the parents of our children) who made the biggest mistakes. Instead of raising our children ourselves, we let TV do it. Instead of offering first answers that define their lives, we offer them questions they do not understand.
I`m not saying we should all join Amish society. We should just stop blaming others for our mistakes.
