Can any of you boys or girls recommend a computer security scannery type thing that I can download to do a virus check, diagnosis and repair on my home computer?

Preferably something that can just be downloaded, installed and activated.

Thank you.

a virus check, diagnosis and repair

I recommend using Spybot Search&Destroy; (which finds trojans, browserhijacks, dialers, suspicious files etc. and is free software (as in beer)) and FreeAV as your virusscanner (wich is free for personal use and does a great job).
Well, your last request “repair” is somwhat difficult. What do you think has to be repaired? Btw I don’t trust those one-for-all-tools with whizbang userinterfaces…

By repair I meant get rid of whatever is there and shouldn’t be there.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, spybot does that. You’re welcome!

Ok…

Use Grisoft AVG free for anti-virus...It’s better than 90% of the ‘paid for’ rest...and beat most of the others in tests…

Use Spybot (Search and Destroy) and use the ‘Tea Timer’ settings and ‘Immunize’ settings..

Use Spware Blaster to do the same as Spybot

All the above are free...and offer an excellent level of protection...AVG and Spybot will scan and repair

I use Lavasoft’s free AdAware in addition to DB’s recommendations. It often finds stuff that Spybot misses.

I recommend ‘CCleaner’ as well…

Set it to 7 passes when removing shit leftover files..

Be a bit more wary of the Registry Cleaner bit of the program tho’…
