However much a sympathise about the child being ill with his asparagus problems, he must have been a right shit in the classroom and I guess the teacher just hated him.

You miss the point.  Disciplinary problems are not democratically solved in the classroom vigilante style amongst the child’s peers.  They’re handled professionally, between the teacher, the parent, and a school administrator, after hours, away from the child.  “Right shit” or not, the kid didn’t deserve what he got.
