Thought I’d give this a whirl and wasn’t expecting anything much, so I was amazed to find that it actually does what it says on the tin. The (free) software emulates your XP desktop and borrows resources from the host computer. I’ve been running a Sandisk USB drive with it installed for a couple of days and haven’t missed the laptop at all when I’m out - I just stick the flash drive into the nearest PC and start working. Definitely worth taking a look at. I’m not a gamer but I understand this means you can have all your stuff installed on the stick and, since Mojopac talks to the host computer’s graphics card (in a totally isolated way; nothing gets fucked up on either host or stick), you can get performance limited only by the host. Very simple, very cool indeed.

Have’t got a clue, mate - I just got inspired by a cover story on a computer mag to start looking into virtualisation on USB drives and iPods and found something which works really well. I think that one of the alternatives, Moka5, is based on VMWare but, since I’m just remembering something parrot-fashion, don’t trust me on that. What I do know for sure is that, on my 4GB Sandisk USB I’ve now got all of the apps I’m ever likely to really need when I’m out and about and don’t have to carry a laptop around if I know there’s likely to be a PC anywhere in the vicinity. Admittedly, I’ve only given it a workout plugged into machines with a minimum of 2GB RAM but I’m pretty confident that it would cut the mustard on something less beefy. I’m seriously looking into working out how I can build a pocket-sized flash array with about a squillion gig of effective RAM to see if I can haul my entire software suite around with me for super-fast working wherever and whatever; it would be a freelancer’s dream come true to be able to handle work at the drop of a hat without having to haul a laptop about the globe. There’s probably some simple technical reason why I won’t be able to do this but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s possible.

Ditto that, dr.fox - thanks for the links. Anything which saves me from being shackled to the misery of Windows makes me smile. That said, the one handy thing about Mojopac that’s really coming in useful for me is to be able to use some fairly high-end Windows apps wherever I am. But the more native Linux apps that work as well for me the closer it gets to that fantastic Microsoft-free day I’ve been dreaming of…
