I always have to be careful how I put this, but here goes…
At the time of the Hillsborough Disaster, I lived in Sheffield. A friend of mine lived literally just round the corner from the ground. On the day in question, he came over to mine (I lived on practically the other side of the city) and said that he had to get out of Hillsborough because of “all the drunk Liverpool fans”.
I don’t believe a word of what was on that Sun front page on the site Teddy linked to. I don’t doubt that it was a tragedy what happened that day (or that it would have happened anyway even if everyone in attendance was 100% sober). People who lost family or friends have my utmost sympathy. The police made some very bad decisions.
However, the argument usually put forward that the fans were completely blameless because none of them had been drinking is completely false. Like I said, it would probably have happened anyway - but please don’t be misled, there were drunk fans there that day.
I don’t want to upset or offend anyone by saying this, please don’t think that is my intention. I’m just saying what I know.
