I wouldn’t say she was 16 or 14 more like 8!  Seen a programme before the games about how they train their future gymnasts.  3 and 4 year olds, being bent backwards so their head touches their feet then while they are crying with pain, told to do 60 push ups and sit ups and telling them not to worry about any injury or crying just get on with it.  Parents are happy they don’t have to pay for their schooling and college, gees such a wonderful country.

It’s hard to say, continuous gymnastics training can severely stunt growth and development of women, it’s happened with the Russian ones in the past. Though she doesn’t look 16, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

While it’s great to bash easy targets king1and, go to any gymnastics school at the highest level and you will find coaches forcing students to do things they don’t want to, that hurt and that make them cry, most of them hug the coach at the end of the day when they achieve their goal.

if the question on this was is she 12 or 14 we’d all vote 12, which shows we really don’t know her age, we’re just guessing based on how western kids look, any chinese physiology(sic) experts here?

Looks young, but then again most East Asian girls do for their ages.  The Russians also have a suspciously young gymnast and half the Japanese gymnast team don’t look like 16 either.

@jingo why is china a easy target? I don’t see UK, America, Australia, Germany putting their 3/4 year olds through that torture. As soon as i see film of them doing that then i will say thats fucked up to.  In my book and I’m pretty sure everyone else who see it will say thats child abuse.

King1and - then you’re not looking close enough, there’s been plenty of documentaries and other such programs showing young kids from western countries being pushed way beyond what most consider the line to cruelty, be it gymnastics, ice skating, cheerleading, pageants or just education. Point is it’s easy to critisise another culture becuase they’re different.

You know after thinking about it, if they use underage girls, and they do, whats really stopping them from using boys in place of the girls?  Like the Futurama episode where Bender becomes a Fem-bot to take gold medals.  Throw on some eye makeup, grow some long hair, and strap on some tighty ball sling and whamo.  Of course knowing China they may have really just took it all off just in case anybody noticed any bumps where they aren’t supposed to be.

clownshoes, to compete in gymnastics the rules state you must be 16+. If the girls are under 16 then the chinese broke the rules.

Extreme training from a young age can easily stop the growth. That’s why most fitness centers has an age restriction.. Starting hard training at age 8 is not healthy

I’m no expert on gymnastics, but does being 12 give you any advantage over being 16?

Actually the ideal age is supposed to be 14, so yeah it does help to enter a younger competitor.  The older you get, the more the stress of performing at events like this affects you.  Also these girls really just need to be flexible and have good balance.  Not saying they aren’t strong for their weights but, the strength that comes along with age doesn’t really come into play in these events.

if indeed the chinese did lie about their age, shame on them.  but ironic part of this ordeal?  pres bush lies to us americans and kills millions of iraqi citizens and thousands of our 18 yr old boys and girls and we play like it never happened.

then some ‘14’ year olds beat our 16 year olds and everybody’s up in arms…

What exactly does a war have to do with the Olympics?  Gee let me throw some anti-war political horse shit comment at talk about a Country cheating at the Olympics.  Do yourself a favor…Just vote for Obama and when he craps everything up also, then go cry about how some how it was Bush’s fault.  U.S. is headed to the crapper no matter who the presdent is.  The people make the difference, not some elected goon who shows up on TV to say everything is OK.
